Colon Cancer Treatment

This website was developed to help you in your search for answers about colon cancer and colon cancer treatment. Although we are not doctors or researchers we have compiled information on what colon cancer is, how to prevent and detect colon cancer and available treatments. Other than skin cancer, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer found in both men and women in the United States . The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be about 104,950 new cases of colon cancer and 40,340 new cases of rectal cancer in the year 2005. These will account for about 56,290 deaths. With more colorectal cancer screenings being done the death rate has been going down for the past 15 years. This is attributed to the early detection and removal of polyps before they turn cancerous.

As with most all cancers there are three main types of treatment for colon cancer or colorectal cancer, surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. New therapies such as monoclonal antibodies are now beginning to be used as well. One factor that might determine if just one or a combination of more than one treatment will be used is the stage or advancement of the cancer.

Surgery remains the main treatment for colon cancer. The cancer and at times a length of the normal colon on either side of the cancer are removed. Nearby lymph nodes might be removed as well. Early colon cancer can be removed through a colonoscope doing away with the need to cut into the abdomen. Sometimes this will cure the cancer without added measures.
